The sheer number of Hong Kong dim sum restaurants is stunning. But a visit to a proper “teahouse“ is where you‘ll discover scores of different varieties - sweet as well as savoury. Eating Dim sum is usually linked with the older tradition of yum cha (tea tasting) and that is why locals call dim sum restaurants teahouses. One of the oldest and most famous of the lot is Lin Heung Tea House.

And well we did not visit Lin Heung Tea House, the reason being most tea houses are pretty traditional and have a cantonese speaking staff so placing an order could easily become an exercise in frustration. Instead we decided to head over to Jasmine Place at Jardine house which is as good a tea house but with an english speaking staff.

While you are at Tsim Sha Shui don’t miss out on afternoon tea at ‘The Peninsula’. The Peninsula is one of the most prestigious hotels in the world. In fact it was being called ‘the finest hotel east of Suez’ just a few years after opening in 1928. Experiencing afternoon tea at ‘The Peninsula’ is an extremely decadent affair but be prepared to stand in line for an hour or two.
